South African Tourism’s new Google Earth layer is great!
Thanks to sagoodnews for featuring the new(ish) South Africa Google Earth Layer (Google Earth KML file, 500k) and accompanying website. It’s great to see South Africa, as one of the most beautiful countries on earth, being marketed in innovative ways. Now if only we could get our crime under control…

Thanks to my friend Betty from Taiwan for this one:
Jesus and Satan were having an on-going argument about who was better on the computer. They had been going at it for days, and frankly God was tired of hearing all the bickering. Finally fed up, God said, “THAT’S IT! I have had enough. I am going to set up a test that will run for two hours, and from those results, I will judge who does the better job.”
So Satan and Jesus sat down at the keyboards and typed away.
They moused.
They faxed.
They e-mailed.
They e-mailed with attachments.
They downloaded.
They did spreadsheets!
They wrote reports.
They created labels and cards.
They created charts and graphs.
They did some genealogy reports
They did every job known to man.
Jesus worked with heavenly efficiency and Satan was faster than hell. Then, ten minutes before their time was up, lightning suddenly flashed across the sky, thunder rolled, rain poured, and, of course, the power went off.
Satan stared at his blank screen and screamed every curse word known in the underworld. Jesus just sighed.
Finally the electricity came back on, and each of them restarted their computers. Satan started searching frantically, screaming:
“It’s gone! It’s all GONE! “I lost everything when the power went out!”
Meanwhile, Jesus quietly started printing out all of his files from the past two hours of work.
Satan observed this and became very irate.
“Wait!” he screamed. “That’s not fair! He cheated! How come he has all his work and I don’t have any?”
God just shrugged and said,
“JESUS SAVES”

I guess “Thank You” would be the most appropriate response for what just happened.
Don’t forget to catch part 1, if you haven’t already.

You’ve got to love it when this happens. I was doing a bit of a “spring clean”, and R420 (US$50) dropped out of a book I last read about 6 years ago. Thanks, Roger from 2002!

Say what you want about the insincerity of US celebrities adopting African kids - the reality is that large parts of Africa are in severe social trouble, and almost ANY love and parenting is better than none.

I went to fill up my car with petrol last night, and while the attendant was busy, I went to the garage shop’s ATM to draw money (because who walks around with R400 in their pockets all the time?). The problem was, my card didn’t seem to be working. I tried about 10 times and eventually concluded that the machine was broken. So now I had a full tank of petrol, and not enough money to pay for it… Because I was on the way to something that I couldn’t be late for, I didn’t have the option to find another ATM (and how would I have got there, without a car?). So, being a Christian, I prayed that my card would work, went back to the machine, and tried again. And this time it did.

An amazing image drawn in a single pen stroke.
I was sent this image in an email I was forwarded a few days ago. I’ve seen something like this lines effect done with machines before, but how the author did this by hand is absolutely beyond me.

Is life simpler than we think it is?
Got this via email from one of my Taiwanese ex-students, who is in his mid teens:
I will go to camping.
With my friends and classmates.
Shana will go with me.
I am so happy about that.

This is worth US$1.33 according to the Zimbabwean government, but much less in reality, as it is only really possible to get foreign currency on the black market.
What a terrible shame that a country that was once so prosperous is now in economic meltdown…

I spend more time on the Internet than anyone else I know. I’m constantly discovering amazing stuff produced by amazing people, and some of it is so good that it needs to be shared. I’ll try never to post boring or irrelevant material on this blog, and if I do, you’re welcome to give me an earful!
